RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
